It turns out things are just much easier if I allow this. Maybe after a while I
can get rid of it, but I don't have high hopes.

Hate it. But as discussed offline, since this is a transient change and you can
add a TODO threatening to harm anyone who might try to use these interfaces
during their short and dubious existence, LGTM
