I already ran try jobs before uploading this CL, but I can run another set. 
Note that the unit test code doesn't actually include a test for this (but has a
TODO to add it in the future).  I'll just use the commit queue-- it's unlikely
to break things, at any rate.  Thanks much.

This is a compilation problem on the master branch.  (Looking at logs,
apparently some disk is read-only when compilation expects it to be read only?) 
I'll resubmit once the tree clears up.
