Maybe that's because I don't know python well, but directories seems unused.

This is how you use os.walk. I don't like it, but it is straight out of the
documentation. Do this at a command line:

help(os.walk)

+      for filename in files:
+        fullname = os.path.relpath(os.path.join(root, filename))
