I'm not sure if this is really the behavior we want.   Unless this is the
implicit 'out' directory that we normally write to, If the directory doesn't
exist, maybe we should print an error and exit (without an exception)?

documentation-out defaults to "out".  Just like --work will create the output
directory, this is mirroring that functionality.
